API Tobacco Prevention Asian & Pacific Islander Tobacco Education Network (APITEN)
This project brings together individuals and organizations to advocate for tobacco-free Asian & Pacific Islander communities as a statewide network. UPAC works with a three-member consortium and specifically develops and galvanizes membership in San Diego, Orange, Riverside, Imperial and San Bernardino Counties. Member involvement includes activities in areas such as media events, mini-grants, informational visits to legislators, and training and conferences. - Language Capabilities: Samoan and English

The project targets San Diego's Filipino, Pacific Islander and Vietnamese communities to achieve the following goals: - reduce youth access to tobacco, from both commercial and social sources;
- reduce exposure to Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) by promoting smoke-free community events and casinos;
- counter pro-tobacco influences such as advertising and sponsorships by providing assistance to organizations to develop and adopt policies to hold smoke-free events and to not accept tobacco company sponsorships..
Efforts include conducting educational presentations, developing and distributing educational materials and tobacco-free promotional items, participating in community events, utilizing ethnic media and building capacity of API organizations to secure non-Tobacco resources.- Language Capabilities:

The Refugee Access Project provides case management services for Vietnamese refugees. The project is a collaboration with Jewish Family Services and Alliance for African Assistance to increase refugee access to health and human care services, by providing interpretation, transportation, translation, and information and referral services to service providers. - Language Capabilities:

Komen Breast Cancer Foundation to reduce the burden of breast cancer by improving access and utilization to breast healthcare service, and to improve communications with providers. Services include, a) interpretation and transportation, b) participation and outreach at ethnic community events for outreach and materials distribution, and c) publishing in ethnic media, and d) conducting education about breast self exam, clinical breast exams, and mammography at work sites. - Language Capabilities:

Project FLIGHT (Families Living In Good Health Together) will improve the access of low-income and limited English-proficient Asian and Pacific Islander pregnant women, and children ages 0-5 years, to health services and early literacy activities through outreach and education, providing interpretation and translation, and providing case management and referrals to appropriate health care providers and services. - Language Capabilities:

UPAC Fun & Fitness Project Funded by The California Wellness Foundation, this project is designed to support a culturally appropriate worksite and community-based, fitness program for low and middle-income Asian American and Pacific Islander adult women. The program will institutionalize a no cost and easily accessible exercise program, and promote healthy practices for staff and clients. - Language Capabilities:

Hepatitis B Prevention for Young Asian & Pacific Islanders A community-based program in partnership with Community Health Group and Asian Pacific Health center, to increase the rates of screening an vaccination for hepatitis B among 12-25 year olds. UPAC will develop culturally appropriate outreach ad education strategies targeted to adolescents and young adults at greatest risk of infection with hepatitis B due to their low rates of Immunization against the disease. - Language Capabilities: Lao and English

Case Studies and Related LinksFor more information, please visit our case studies and related links. The case studies are based on our experiences with clients served in the Asian & Pacific Islander Health Care Access Project, funded by the Office of Minority Health, Bilingual/Bicultural Demonstration Grant Program. The program focuses on four cancer areas: breast, cervical, liver & lung, and heart disease. Program components include: educational presentations, material development, cultural competence training, interpretation, and translation. The case studies are presented by health educator staff members who are bilingual in Cambodian, Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin, Chieu Chau and Taiwanese), Lao and Vietnamese.
