Health Promotion and Disease Prevention
In 1981, a grant from the California Department of Social Services, Office of Refugee Services helped develop Indochinese Health Support Services which promoted access to health care through community outreach, health orientation, educational presentations, clinic visits, and translation and interpretation. Over the past 28 years UPAC has continued to provide health promotion and disease prevention services for API and other immigrant and refugee populations. Current programs include:
Weaving an Islander Network for Cancer Awareness Research (WINCART)
Funded through CSU Fullerton, UPAC participates in a collaboration of community-based organizations and researchers which conducts a) community outreach and education to the Pacific Islander communities b) develop and conduct a comprehensive needs assessment, c) develop and pretest bilingual educational materials and activities based on needs assessment, d) implement educational campaigns, e) disseminate program findings through community report backs, presentations and peer review articles, and f) increase the use of beneficial biomedical and behavioral interventions.
Path of Women (PATH) Project
Funded by Orange County Asian and Pacific Islander Community Alliance (OCAPICA), program conducts a) Vietnamese community outreach and education to increase access to screening for breast and cervical cancer, b) education to community leaders and health care providers on cancer awareness, screening, treatment and support, c) patient navigation through coordination and collaboration with American Cancer Society and Council of Community Clinics to access breast and cervical cancer screening/ re-screening, d) social support, e) policy advocacy, f) health care workforce recruitment, g) data dissemination on best practices and models and g) funding sustainability.
